A wicked ice princess sets out to freeze and capture Earth for her planetary collection. But Sailor Moon and her tight-knit group of gal pals will have nothing of the sort. Paced more for the love story fan, this episode focuses on a handsome young astronomer, Kakeru, who discovers a mysterious crystal needed by Princess Snow Kaguya to carry out her plan. Soon after finding the crystal, Kakeru develops a deep friendship with Luna (Sailor Moon’s cat), a friendship that eventually leads to the Sailors’ discovery of the Earth’s predicament and to each character’s discovery of the tremendous powers of love and justice–all in about an hour.
Despite its slower pace, this feature incorporates all the positive qualities other Sailor Moon episodes share: sharp, eye-catching artwork; humorous but heartfelt communication among the girls; an understandable plot line; and plenty of flashy transforming. Further enhancements include an intelligent soundtrack (a nice balance of kooky sci-fi and seriously beautiful tunes) and the introduction of the “Outer Senshi.” This slightly older, more mature group of young women–Sailors Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto–join our regular band of bubble-spraying, crescent-beaming skirt tossers to melt the ice princess once and for all. The dubbed movie (tagged with the new title of Hearts in Ice) is an edited version of the subtitled film. Some language and violence (a few frames) have been altered. Du to the inclusion of mild nudity (imagine a spinning, naked Barbie), parents may want to think twice before offering this movie to fans younger than 6. The DVD is of the uncut version but also has the English language dialogu. –Liane Thomas

How far would you go for a brand-new, fully loaded pickup truck? Would you go as far as the 23 contestants in Hands on a Hard Body, who entered a contest in which the last one standing with his or her hand on the car drove off with it?
S.R. Bindler documents the contest that takes place each year at a Nissan dealership in Longview, Texas. And what a contest it is. Twenty-three names are drawn at random and these lucky folks get the opportunity to participate. The rules are simple: one hand must remain on the truck at all times; no leaning or squatting allowed; if the hand is raised even momentarily, the contestant is out. One 5-minute break is permitted every hour, and one 15-minute break every 6 hours. The last three survivors–excuse us, contestants–must be tested for drugs. The results are hilarious. The gloves irritate hands (sweat could ruin the truck’s finish), legs go numb, people get on each other’s nerves. Strategy is involved, cheaters are accused, competition is fierce. “It’s a contest, they say, of stamina, but it’s who can maintain their sanity the longest,” we’re told by 1992 winner Benny Perkins, who competes once again. This offbeat film shows the quirkier side of human nature while providing a thoroughly entertaining watch. Each contestant represents something, but which will win out: desperation (a woman tired of riding her bike everywhere but who can’t afford car payments), determination (a toothless woman who “tr[ies] to finish everything I start”), God (a woman’s church holds a prayer chain for her as she communes with Jesus by the truck), endurance (a former Marine who once stayed awake for five days), or experience (Perkins is sure he knows all the tricks)? Who finally makes it through the 78-hour ordeal? You’ll have to watch this comical film to find out. –Jenny Brown

According to the tradition in rural Chile, a baby who dies while being born becomes an angel and its death is celebrated. During the celebration, the child is dressed in white and given paper wings so he can go to heaven. In a Chilean town, a boy watches as his newborn brother is born and then taken to the graveyard the next day. However, he boy discovers the paper wings have been left behind. Winner of the World Audience Award at Sundance, Once starts out as a small-scale romance, like Before Sunrise, before arriving somewhere unexpected. An Irish busker (Glen Hansard, the Frames and The Commitments) meets a Czech flower seller (Marketa Irglova) while singing on the streets of Dublin. (In the credits, they’re listed as Guy and Girl.) She likes what she hears and lets him know. Turns out she’s a musician, too. They work on a few songs together and a friendship is forged. She lives with her widowed mother, who doesn’t speak English. He lives with his widowed father, who owns a repair shop. Since he broke up with his girlfriend, the guy has been drifting, unable and unwilling to get his life in order. The girl encourages him to pursu a record deal, and the guy emerges from his funk. Then he makes a move on the girl, who rejects his advances. He’s confused, but as he comes to find, there’s a reason she’s keeping her distance. Though Once is filled with appealing folk-pop by Hansard and Irglova (released on CD as The Swell Season), the movie isn’t a traditional musical, but rather a more optimistic Brief Encounter. Filmmaker John Carney, Hansard’s former bandmate, captures the real city–in all its afflunce and poverty–rather than the picture postcard version. His beautifully shot film serves as a heartfelt ballad about all the underclass Guys and Girls swept aside amidst Ireland’s economic miracle. –Kathleen C. Fennessy

Kids will enjoy this half-hour Sesame Street video, in which the whole gang takes a piano up to the roof and sings some of their favorite songs. But they are frequntly interrupted by workmen Biff and Sully, who keep tuning in songs on their TV (only to knock the antenna out of whack). The blend of people and puppets is charming, and the bits culled from the TV show add to the fun.
